How to Form and Use Present Simple and Present Continuous tenses

Hello everybody, this post is a part of our series lessons about Tenses in English, and I will begin with Present Simple versus Present Continuous. I've made a presentation to you. Also, we are going to take a look at some examples and explain the usage of these two Tenses. And, by the end of the lessons, you will be able to use perfectly both tenses, and you will know exactly when to say 'I do' and 'I'm doing'.

So let's get started to look at the difference between Present Simple and Present Continuous.

Present Simple and Present Continuous :
I - Formulation :

How do we formulate the Present Simple Tense?
I play basketball.
You play basketball.
He/She plays basketball.
We play basketball.
You play basketball.
They basketball.

How do we formulate the Present Continuous Tense?
You probably remember that you need the verb 'To be' to conjugate this verb.

I am playing basketball.
You are playing basketball.
He/She is playing basketball.
We are playing basketball.
You are playing basketball.
They are playing basketball.

( just you should conjugate the verb (to be) and add (ing) to the main verb and that will give you the Present Continuous )
Now let's look at the main part of this lesson.
II - Usage :

When do we use the Present Simple ? and when do we use the Present Continuous?
Present Simple :

Present Simple used to indicate facts and habits, things which are always true general facts.
example :
Facts :
1- I live in England. ( and you where do you live ? )
2- I like cookies. ( and you what do you like ? )
3- It rains a lot here. ( and where you are does it rains a lot ? )
Habits :
1- I usually shop on Friday. ( How about you ? when do you usually shop? )
2- He drives fast. ( How about you ? what are your driving habit ? do you drive fast? )
3- She always drinks milk in the morning. ( and you? what do you drink in the morning? )

So,present simple of facts and habits things that are always true.

Let's look at present continuous now ;)
Present continuous.
We use present continuous for action in progress now, temporary situations things that are happening now and stop at some point.
example :
1- I am talking to you. ( what about you? what are you doing now? ... I hope that
2- You are listening to me. ( very carefully )
3- It's raining.
So, just to sump up use the present simple for facts and habits things that happen regularly ( general facts ), And use present continuous for things that are in progress now, As we mentioned earlier temporary situations or actions.
