Rules to form negative sentences in English

This post is the part number 2 about the lesson of Negatives in English, you can also visit last part here: How to form negative sentences in English?

Now let's move on negative words wish is another way of making a sentence negative, changing the positive word in the sentence to a negative word, and there are some examples of negative words :
 Negative words :
No,Nothing,Never,No-one,No longer,Neither ...nor,(very) little,(very) few.
let's see how this work :
example :
Negative verb                           Positive verb + negative word
- There are some people.             - There not many people.                          - There are no people.
- There was someone at home.    - There was not anyone at home.          - There was no-one at home.
- We saw something.                    - We did not saw anything.                   - We saw nothing.
- I have always done this.            - I have not ever done this.                    - I have never done this.
- Is it still raining?                        - It is not raining anymore.                   - It is no longer raining.
- We drink both wine and beer.   - We do not drink either wine or beer.   - We drink neither wine or beer
- They had much money.             - They did not have much money.         - They had (very) little money
- She knows many players.          - She does not know many players.      - She knows (very) few players.

Let's to stay with word 'little' and 'few' !!

Note:

'little' and 'few' are negative.

They are the opposite of 'much' and 'many', and 'almost none'.
'a little' and 'a few' are positive.

They mean 'some'

They had (very) little money. = They had some money.

They had a little money. = They had some money.

*It is not a must, but it is a good idea to add 'very' to the negative expressions to clearly distinguish them from the positive ones.
Making words is the subject position negative: all, everyone, everything
There are to ways of making these words negative when they are is the subject position of a sentence.
1- By adding 'not': not all, not everyone, not everything.
2- By changing the word: None, no-one, nothing.
Note that the sense changes depending on which form you use.
let's show you an example :

All then guests have arrived.
1.Not all the guests have arrived. = Only some of them have arrived. However if you use a negative word that is 'None' the opposite of 'All' to make sentence negative it mean something different.
2.None of the guests have arrived. = No guests have arrived.
Avoid saying 'All the guests haven't arrived'. avoid use a negative verb because it is ambiguous, your listener would be sure wish one you mean.
let's look at another example.

Note that the sense changes depending on which form you use.
Everyone is ready. ( add "not")
1.Not everyone is ready. as you know now it means = Only some people are ready.
2.No-one is ready. = There are no ready people.
And again avoid using a negative verb, because it makes it ambiguous.
Avoid saying :'Everyone isn't ready'. It is ambiguous.

Let's look at another group of words you have to be carefully when you want to create a negative idea with them.

'Both','someone','something'
                 #
'some','no-one','nothing'
There is only one way to creating a negative idea here and that by using the opposite.
( There is only one way of making these negative when they are in the subject position: By using negative words.)

Both of them are here. ===> Neither of them are here.
Avoid saying:'Not both of them are here' OR 'Both of them aren't here'.

Something happened. ===> Nothing happened.
Avoid saying:'Not anything happened' OR 'something didn't happen'

Now, let's look at some common mistakes :)
Common mistakes

the first common type of mistakes is :
Forgetting the auxiliary when cannot see it.
for example saying something like:

- I Have not any time. (mistake)
Here the verb have is the main verb is the present simple, therefore you do need an auxiliary 'don't'.
- I don't have any time.(correct)
- He knows not many people.(mistake)
- He doesn't know many people.(correct)
Avoid saying :
- They went not very far.(mistake)
Change your verb into a negative verb.
- They didn't go very far.(correct)
No let's loot at the second type of common mistakes.
Using two auxiliaries/an auxiliary with modals/an auxiliary with verb 'to be'.
for example :

- I do not have finished.(mistake)
Here the verb have is the auxiliary for this tense you don't need another one you can simply add not to the auxiliary 'have'.
- I haven't finished.(correct)
- He doesn't can swim.(mistake)
Again there no need for the auxiliary 'doesn't', can is a modal verb and take's direct negative.
- He -can't swim.(correct)
Now let's look at an example with the verb 'to be'
- I didn't be able to call.(mistake)
Once again adding 'not' to the verb 'to be' is enough, no need for 'didn't'
- I wasn't able to call.(correct)
And finally the last type of common mistake with negatives is :
Using double.
 for example :
- I don't have nothing. (mistake)
- I don't have anything.(correct)
or use negative word.
- I have nothing.(correct)
Let's give you one last example have a double negative.

- I haven't never been there.(mistake)
with negative verb ===> I haven't ever been there.(correct)
with negative word ===> I have never been there.(correct)
